February Updates

We’ve just returned from Sarawak, where our field technicians have been hard at work cutting and walking paths for scientific observation. The 3 clusters of participating villages will start data collection in March, tracking visual sightings and signs for mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians. The Baram Heritage Survey will inform future land use strategies, forest protection, and indigenous rights campaigns. We’re excited to see this important project come to life and will keep you updated on upcoming developments. 
 

Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad submitted his resignation on Monday. The announcement comes amid speculation that 94-year-old Mahathir was attempting to form a new ruling coalition that would exclude his promised successor Anwar Ibrahim.

This surprise move comes after 2 years of relative progress and stability, with the federal Malaysian government making strides in the areas of climate and conservation policy. Civil society is watching developments closely amid fears that the resignation could plunge the country into political crisis. It is unclear who will be the next Prime Minister or whether general elections will be held.
