The Bruno Manser Fund has reported on developments in the Baram region of Sarawak, East Malaysia. Desperate Penan communities in Long Seridan have set up a blockade against the construction works of the Petronas Gas Pipe Line project, which has been encroaching into their water catchment area at Long Ludin and Long Seridan, Ulu Tutoh, Baram. The construction works dangerously polluted the Penan’s drinking water.
We urge Petronas to protect areas of environmental sensitivity such as water catchment areas so that Penan communities have access to clean and unpolluted water. The blockade was set up one week ago, and the Penan have vowed to sustain the blockade until their problems and demands are resolved by the government.
