| The Price of Malaysia's Palm Oil Expansion

KOTA BARU, Malaysia -- Malaysia is being blamed by many European governments and conservationists for its drive to increase its oil-palm plantations at the expense of its rain forests and the habitats of tigers and orangutans. The country's minister for primary industries is off to Europe this month to attempt some damage control on the issue. As new plantations encroach on the habitat of tigers and orangutans, plantation workers are increasingly coming into conflict with these creatures - and it is the animals that are losing that conflict. |

IJM Corp Bhd, which is injecting its plantation business into Rahman Hydraulic Tin Bhd, will invest between RM120mil and RM150mil to strengthen its plantation operations in Sabah. This investment will include the construction of a crude palm oil (CPO) mill and the development of about a third of the company's total acreage. |
