| Indigenous Land Claim Invalidated by Sarawak Court

Indigenous groups seeking to protect ancestral lands and forests in Sarawak, Malaysia suffered a setback July 8th when the State Court of Appeals overturned a major precedent case in native rights litigation. The court overturned an earlier decision that an Iban Dayak community had customary rights over a disputed area of forest near the village. Citing a lack of credible evidence, the court returned control of the disputed 672 hectares to a plantation company whose holdings include over 200,000 hectares in plantation licenses. |
